MFM Devotional 28th June 2025: MESSAGE

Forgiving others is a major theme in Christianity. Through the sacrificial offering of Jesus Christ, God forgave the sins of man. The Son of God shed His blood and died for us to earn us divine pardon. Although He was wrongly accused and crucified, Jesus prayed to the Father to “forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34a). Similarly, in the parable of the unforgiving servant, Jesus reveals that God frowns at people who would not forgive others.

A cardinal part of the model prayer He gave His disciples when they asked Him to teach them how to pray was: “And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us…” (Luke 11:4a).

Matthew 18:21-22 is an account of the question Peter asked Jesus on the subject of forgiving others. He asked, “Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times?” Jesus’ reply was: “I say not unto thee seven times: but, seventy times seven.” To further reinforce the importance of forgiving others, Jesus then went on to give the parable of the unforgiving servant. He insisted that the forgiveness should come from your heart; it should be forgive and forget, not the “I will forgive but can’t forget” type of forgiving some people practice.

The Lord demands that we obey and imitate Him in all things, and that includes forgiving others. If you have a problem in this area, go to Him and ask for His grace. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15). Complete obedience is the hallmark of a true Christian. Is your obedience on the subject of forgiving others prompt, complete, and unquestioning?

Stephen’s life was exemplary. The scripture describes him in glowing terms. He was full of the Spirit and wisdom (Acts 6:3); a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5); a man full of grace and power, and he did great wonders and miracles among the people (Acts 6:8). The most impressive of his credentials was that his life reflected Jesus, especially in forgiving others.

When the Libertines and Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputed with Stephen, they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. He was eventually stoned to death (Acts 7). Yet he prayed for their sins to be forgiven them just as Jesus did. We should emulate such devoted Christians.
