FIRE SCRIPTURE: Genesis 18:1-10 (ESV)
1 And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks[a] of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. 2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth 3 and said, “O Lord,[b] if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree
5 while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” 6 And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs[c] of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. 8 Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
9 They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” 10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.
MFM Devotional 27th June 2025: MESSAGE
A true Christian depends on the Holy Spirit for guidance and help in all areas of life. He is required to be sensitive to the prompting and leading of the Holy Spirit, who always loves to communicate with His children. Spiritual sensitivity is an asset to every believer. It demands that both verbal and non-verbal messages of the Holy Spirit should trigger the right responses from a Christian. Another quality that will add immense benefits to your life as a Christian is spiritual alertness. It is being aware of what is taking place around you so you can have the right response to it. Are you spiritually sensitive and alert?
Genesis 18 relates the account of Abraham’s life-changing encounter with divinity. Heaven presented him with a rare opportunity. He needed spiritual sensitivity and alertness to recognize the opportunity and avail himself of it. Abraham did not miss the opportunity! The three visitors were Jehovah and two angels. In verses 2 and 3, the Bible says that when Abraham saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, and said, “My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant.”
Note that Genesis 18:1 identifies one of the three visitors as Jehovah. It says that “the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.” The question is, how did Abraham know it was the LORD? He was spiritually sensitive and alert. This virtue earned Abraham the gift or blessing he had been waiting for all his life – Isaac. His spiritual sensitivity, coupled with his hospitality, made the LORD declare, “I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and Sarah thy wife shall have a son” (Genesis 18:10 & 14).
Spiritual sensitivity and alertness are products of our genuine, daily walk with the Holy Spirit. To be spiritually sensitive and alert, you need to grow your relationship with the Spirit of God and value His abiding, indwelling, and empowering presence. You need to be sensitive to His prompting, learn to hear His voice, interpret His verbal and non-verbal messages, and obey them. It pays to be spiritually sensitive and alert. Spiritual sensitivity and alertness made Elisha receive the double portion of Elijah’s spirit, which he asked for.
