The Old Prophet and the Man of God
11 Now a certain old prophet was living in Bethel. His son came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. His sons also told their father the words that he had spoken to the king. 12 Then their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” His sons had seen the way taken by the man of God who had come from Judah.
13 Then he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him, and he got on it. 14 He followed the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
“I am,” he said.
15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat some food.”
16 But he answered, “I cannot go back with you or accompany you; I will not eat food or drink water with you in this place. 17 For a message came to me by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat food or drink water there or go back by the way you came.’”
18 He said to him, “I am also a prophet like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat food and drink water.’” The old prophet deceived him, 19 and the man of God went back with him, ate food in his house, and drank water.
20 While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back, 21 and the prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because you rebelled against the Lord’s command and did not keep the command that the Lord your God commanded you—
22 but you went back and ate food and drank water in the place that he said to you, “Do not eat food and do not drink water”—your corpse will never reach the grave of your ancestors.’”
MFM Daily Devotional 25th September 2025 MESSAGE:
Many believers, who would have lived glorious lives and made Heaven, ended miserably because they were careless, negligent and disobedient.
In our memory verse for today, the Lord admonishes us to pay more careful attention to the words we have heard and apply them correctly to our daily lives and situations. He gave us a reason for this important admonition: so that we do not slip or drift away.
Our world is full of distractions and other devices of the enemy that have been designed to take our focus away from God and His Word. The enemy wants us to ignore God’s work, stop observing our Quiet Time, discontinue fellowshipping with other Christians and abandon God completely. The enemy’s sole aim is to see believers drift away. When we make Bible study, memorisation, meditation and application our daily routine, we will not drift away from the Lord and His way.
The Word of God is our anchor and the Holy Spirit is our stabilizer. However, it is unfortunate that many believers fall, fail and experience needless or avoidable pain for neglecting God’s Word as well as the prompting and direction of the Holy Spirit.
The Biblical account of the man of God in 1 Kings 13 provides several lessons for us today. The Word of the Lord came to the man of God and commissioned him for an important assignment. God sent the man of God to Jeroboam with specific instruction “not to eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way you came” (1 Kings 13:8).
Beloved, as long as this man of God heeded God’s Word and paid careful attention to the minute details, obeying the Word to the letter, all was well with him. He demonstrated God’s power and prevailed against all oppositions.
However, he later met an old prophet who dissuaded him until he disobeyed God’s Word. When he did, he lost divine presence and covering he once enjoyed. After he had eaten and drunk with the old prophet, he continued his journey and a lion killed him.
We all need to pay heed to God’s Word completely and always.
Partial or incomplete obedience is costly. Beware!
