Topic: Initiative

Bible Verse for Today: “If you receive my words and treasure up my commandments […] If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.” – Proverbs 2:1, 4-5 ESV

Born into a family of musicians, Johann Sebastian Bach was only 18 when he gained his first permanent position as organist of the New Church in Arnstadt, Germany. Bach had natural abilities but was not content with the ordinary. Showing initiative, on several occasions he traveled long distances to hear other musicians and learn from them.

When 19, Bach traveled to Lübeck to hear the famed organist Dieterich Buxtehude. Bach walked the entire journey (more than 250 miles). To Bach, this was worth the investment. There, Bach learned skills that helped make him one of the greatest musicians of all time.

Bach was not content with good enough. He passionately wanted more.

This principle also applies to our Christian faith. Proverbs describes the passion of a person who desires to grow in wisdom and understanding. This begins with a commitment to study and treasure God’s Word. Hunger for wisdom and “search for it as for hidden treasures.”

Bach did not know what awaited him in Lübeck, but the process changed his life. What riches does God have in store for you? His Word contains “hidden treasures” that can change your life. Seek Him diligently. Cry out for a deeper understanding.

Remember Jesus’ words: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).

Prayer: Father, I cry out for Your wisdom. Teach me. Change me. Reveal insights that otherwise would be hidden. In Jesus’ name, amen.
