Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to the family of faith. — Gal 6:10
We all have a mission in this world, even if we are never called to travel to distant lands to preach the gospel.
Christ’s command begins with the person next to you. Don’t wait for someone to be a neighbor to you—be a neighbor to the one in need. The best way to advance God’s Kingdom is to bring the person you can most easily influence to the Savior. All great work in the world begins not with committees, but with the dedication, self-sacrifice, and devotion of individual people.
The Apostle Paul outlines three ways to help others. The first is the restoration of those who have fallen (Galatians 6:1). How often in life, a Christian man or woman is overtaken by temptation, falling into sin and leaving a deep stain on their character. David and Peter both experienced this! What follows is deep remorse. The Psalms are filled with David’s repentance. The fallen soul bears a heavy burden, and too often fellow Christians pass them by with judgment, rather than reaching out. No one visits or cares to help them regain their footing.
We are called to fulfill “Christ’s law” by seeking out the lost, restoring the wandering soul, helping to carry their burden, while being mindful that we too could fall into the same temptation.
Second is the care of pastors and ministers (Galatians 6:6). If everyone who is taught in church and Sunday school would take the time to minister to their teachers, many a weary servant of Christ would be revived with renewed courage and hope. Share your gratitude, prayers, and appreciation for the blessing you’ve received.
Third is the ministry of all believers (Galatians 6:9-10). Opportunities to do good are always before us, with many who need a helping hand. “The poor,” Jesus said, “you will always have with you.” Let’s share the burdens of others, especially those in the family of faith.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Give us grace, Lord, to be encouragers of others, never discouragers; always lightening the load, never adding to it, for those who come within our reach. Amen.
