Today’s Scripture: “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9
Message: Jesus did not come to execute the wrath of God–he made that clear when he announced his Messiah manifesto from Isaiah 61. Jesus had come to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and not the day of vengeance of our God.
Rather than administer judgment, Jesus bore judgment. Rather than carrying out the wrath of God, he bore in his body the wrath of God.
For almost the last two thousand years God has been proclaiming the year of the Lord’s favor. He has been patient with wicked men, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.
But one day Jesus is coming back. And he is coming to finish that terrifying part of the second verse in Isaiah 61. He is coming to judge the living and the dead, to crush the wicked, punish evildoers, and overthrow rulers of nations. Just picturing the scene tempers my pleas for Jesus to return soon–I know of too many people, even family members, who may end up getting trampled in the grapes of God’s wrath!
Often I pray, “Come quickly, Lord Jesus.” But sometimes I ask the Lord to hold off a bit longer that great and terrible day of his return, the day of vengeance of our God. We only have a short time left until the Day of Christ, so let’s get out and proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor!
Thank you, Lord, that nearly two thousand years have passed since you announced your Messiah manifesto. Bless you for being patient, for not instituting God’s wrath. So many people have come into your kingdom as a result of your patience.
