TOPIC: Code of Honour
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? – Acts 23:2-3
A wise man once said that it is foolish to correct upwards. This was a lesson that the great apostle Paul learned, and one that we would all do well to learn. Paul was struck on his mouth at the order of the high priest, and he responded by scolding the high priest.
Although it was unlawful for the high priest to strike Paul, the apostle’s outburst was not allowed by the Holy Spirit. In his being right, Apostle Paul was gravely wrong. In his sincerity, he was sincerely wrong for speaking out of turn to one in a position of spiritual authority. He quickly corrected himself and apologised for speaking evil of one in authority.
This is very instructive on how we’re to relate to spiritual authority as God’s children. We should never criticise, dishonour, or speak against those whom the Lord has placed in positions of authority. If they are in error in some way, it is never your responsibility to try to correct them or even to see yourself as worthy of answering back or arguing with them.
This holds true even if the person in authority is younger than you. You might say certain things thinking you are acting in service to God, not realising you are being influenced by the devil. It is better to leave things alone than to fall into dishonour. Learn to honour and respect. Teach it to yourself, and you will secure your access to greatness.
PROPHETIC DECLARATION
I honour every man and woman of God because I love and honour the God who called them. Therefore, I refuse to malign or in any way speak against any man or woman of God. I choose instead to submit to spiritual authority and walk in love so that I fulfil my calling.
