TOPIC: Vanity Censored!

TEXT: Psalm 119:33-40
33. HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

34. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

35. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

36. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

37. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

38. Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.

39. Turn away my reproach which I fear; for thy judgments are good.

40. Behold, I have longed after thy precepts; quicken me in thy righteousness.

KEY VERSE: “Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.” (Psalms 119:37)

MESSAGE: The eyes have remained very important in human life. Just as the organ plays an important role of seeing; it has however, constituted a serious impediment to many people in their journey to heaven.

A lot of sins have been committed and lives lost as a result of wrong use of the eyes. In our passage today, King David, having been bitten by the scourge of sinful “seeing,” cried unto God, among other things, to turn “away his eyes from beholding vanity.”

There are lots of vanities all over the place. One does not need to go far before seeing them. They are even in places where they should not be. The believer is in a constant battle between right and wrong.

These vanities are running after believers and presenting themselves at every turn. But David knew that “all that glitters is not gold.” The psalmist sought to know God through obedience to His will. He realised that he could do this only by keeping his mind off the things of this world and keeping it on the testimonies of God.

By doing this, the insults will be ignored in his life when he no longer considered obedience to God a thing of which to be ashamed.

Surrendering to and serving God in totality will always bring relief. Making a public show of our stand in God gives relief from worldly encumbrances. Believers are reminded today that nothing else matters but a life lived for Christ; a songwriter says, “Only what’s done for Christ will last.”

That was David’s wish; and that should be the wish of every genuine child of God. However, this cannot be possible except our eyes are turned from beholding vanity on a regular basis.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Those who see through the eyes of Christ always reach their destination.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 61-67
