KEY VERSE
“The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God”(Psalm 87:2,3).
SCRIPTURE READING — Psalm 87:1-7
Ravi Art Vernon narrated the story of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman, also known as Nachmanides, who left Spain in the 13th century to seek peace and beauty in Jerusalem, only to find it in ruins with a small, impoverished Jewish community. He expressed disappointment as the city did not meet his ideal image. Despite his hopes for a heavenly Jerusalem, he was saddened by the reality he encountered.
Psalm 87, our text of today, is among the Psalms often called Psalms of Zion, which describe the importance and glory of Jerusalem, the city of God. And while the Psalms of Zion encourage us to look back and remember the historic city of Jerusalem – where God dwelt among His people – there’s often more to these psalms than a song of praise for a formerly significant city. The psalmist reminds us not only of a town that was but also of a city that is to come. Far more glorious than both the Jerusalem of the past and present.
Rabbi Moses Ben Nachman’s disappointment in not finding the ideal Jerusalem in the13th century still resonates today with the constant insecurity and conflicts in the city. The dream of finding peace in Jerusalem is shattered by the threat of attacks and the need to seek shelter in bomb shelters. The reality of Jerusalem today does not align with the peaceful image portrayed in the Scripture about the glorious city of Zion.
The real Zion will be a city of joy, peace, and rest. It is the city where God Himself dwells. It is where Christ has gone to prepare mansions for the saints of God. No city on earth can equal or rival the heavenly Zion. The streets are made of pure gold. There will be abundant peace and comfort as God wipes away all tears from our eyes. There will be no night there. It is an eternal day. God Himself provides the light of the city. There is no need for prisons or detention centres. Law enforcement is unnecessary because no sinner will be there. It is a place to look up to. Start preparing now by saying yes to Jesus Christ.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is worth living for, waiting for, and working towards the real Zion.
