John 21:17 (KJV) – “He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.”
Daily Devotional Message
After His resurrection, Jesus met Peter on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and asked him a deeply personal question: “Lovest thou me?”
Three times Jesus asked, and three times Peter affirmed his love. Then Jesus gave the same kind of instruction: “Feed my sheep.”
This conversation came after Peter had denied Jesus three times before the crucifixion. Rather than casting Peter aside, Jesus restored him with grace and entrusted him with responsibility.
The Lord’s response reveals a powerful truth: genuine love for Christ is demonstrated through faithful obedience and loving service to others.
It is possible to speak passionately about loving God, yet fail to care for the people He places in our lives.
Jesus connects the two.
When we truly love Him, our lives begin to reflect His compassion, patience, and concern for His people.
To “feed my sheep” means more than providing physical needs.
It includes encouraging the discouraged, teaching God’s Word, praying for others, serving with humility, offering forgiveness, and helping fellow believers grow in their faith.
Every act of love done in Christ’s name becomes an expression of devotion to Him.
Peter’s restoration also reminds us that failure does not have to be the end of our story.
He had made serious mistakes, but Jesus met him with truth, grace, and a renewed calling.
God is able to restore broken people and use them for His glory.
Past failures do not disqualify those who genuinely repent and return to Him.
Perhaps today you feel unworthy because of mistakes you have made.
Remember Peter.
Jesus knew his weaknesses, yet He still called him to serve.
The Lord sees beyond your past and desires to shape your future according to His purpose.
Or perhaps God is calling you to care more intentionally for those around you.
There may be someone who needs encouragement, a listening ear, practical help, or a reminder of God’s love.
Serving others is not a distraction from following Christ—it is one of the clearest expressions of it.
When we love His people, we reflect His heart.
Today, ask yourself the same question Jesus asked Peter: “Do you love Me?”
Then answer not only with your words but with your actions.
Choose to love, serve, encourage, and care for others as Christ has cared for you.
In doing so, you honor the One who first loved you and gave His life for you.
Morning Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your amazing grace and for never giving up on me. Thank You for restoring, forgiving, and calling imperfect people into Your service.
Lord, help me to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Let that love be evident in the way I treat and care for others.
Give me a servant’s heart that reflects the compassion of Jesus. Show me opportunities to encourage the weary, strengthen the weak, and share Your truth with those who need it.
If I have failed or fallen short, remind me that Your mercy is greater than my mistakes and that You are able to restore and use me for Your glory.
Teach me to feed Your sheep by living a life of kindness, humility, faithfulness, and love.
May everything I do point others to Christ and bring honor to Your name.
