Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: — Phil 2:5
In the passage these words come from, the Apostle gives a beautiful description of our Lord’s descent to share in our shame and sorrow, so that it might inspire us to not focus on our own interests, but to follow Jesus’ example. Jesus became the means through which God carried out His plan of redemption.
Guided by the Spirit, the Apostle shows us how Christ, though seated on the throne of God, took step after step toward human need and sin, ultimately embracing us in our low state, so He might bring us back with Him to God’s throne. By identifying Himself with our sin and suffering, He enables us to share in the glory He had with the Father before the world began.
“Let this mindset be in you.” The astronomer Kepler, when looking to the stars, said, “I am thinking over again the first thoughts of God.” But we can think even deeper thoughts, those that filled the heart of Jesus when He stood ready, before the world was made, to be the Lamb who would be slain.
The Apostle calls us to think as Jesus thought: don’t focus only on your own interests; don’t cling to what is yours. Be ready to deny yourself so that God’s love can reach those who need it. We must be willing to set aside ambition and glory so we can help others. This is the only way to reign with Jesus and assist Him in His mission. Many who seek the highest places with Him will never attain them because they refuse to bear His cross, endure shame and misunderstanding. We must take the low place, do the unnoticed tasks, and reject worldly praise if we want to be worthy to stand before Him.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Lord, may these thoughts fill our minds throughout the day, so that our earthly lives may be inspired by the spirit of Heaven. May we go about our business as those who have seen Your face, with the light of Heaven upon us. Amen.
