Charles Stanley Daily Devotional TOPIC: Take My Yoke
SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: Matthew 11:28-30
In first-century Judaism, a rabbi’s “yoke” referred to his specific interpretation and application of Torah—the way of life his disciples would adopt. When Jesus says, “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (v. 30), He’s contrasting His grace-based, gentle teaching with the rigid burdens other rabbis imposed.
Christ’s invitation is to choose Him as your teacher and follow His way of life. Unlike the Pharisees, who added rules that made obedience feel impossible, Jesus offers a path characterized by grace, mercy, and rest for the soul. He doesn’t minimize the call to discipleship, but He makes it sustainable and life-giving.
The relief comes not from having circumstances changed, but from living under a different system. As Paul says, Christ set us free from the yoke of slavery to the law (Galatians 5:1). Instead of striving to earn God’s favor through perfect rule-keeping, we learn from Jesus that God’s love is already ours. We grow in obedience not out of fear, but as a response to grace.
Being yoked with Christ means learning His way—one that brings genuine peace for the soul. Life’s pressures may not lessen, but when you follow His teaching, you find what you’ve been searching for: the kind of rest the world cannot give.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Isaiah 19-22
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Jesus knows we’re imperfect. Yet He graciously gives us the opportunity to learn, grow, and obey without fear.
