DAILY BIBLE VERSE
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two hands and go into hell, into the unquenchable fire. — Mark 9:43
Our Lord calls all who love and follow Him to present themselves as living sacrifices, even though this might expose them to the searching sting of salt and the consuming flame of fire (Mark 9:49). In these moments, He shows us something that hinders our highest aspirations, and there is only one choice—no matter how dear, we must cut it off, even if it is as valuable as a right hand or foot! Of course, it is best to keep our body and faculties pure and righteous; they are vital assets for a successful life. No one should consider such drastic measures unless it is the only alternative to spiritual death or the fate of uselessness, like Gehenna, the garbage dump outside Jerusalem.
Our Lord was right when He said, “Cut it off!” One swift, decisive action is easier in the long run. It could be a friendship that causes us to stumble, a harmful habit draining our energy, or an innocent amusement that hinders our spiritual progress. If we cannot control it, we must give it up. Often, we suffer more from trying to hold onto and manage these things than if we had just removed them completely.
Even lives that seem maimed can be full of strength and purpose. Jesus said, “Enter into life maimed.” Some focus on their losses and sacrifices, while others fix their eyes on life, ignoring the narrow gate through which they must pass. Yes, they are maimed, but by giving up lesser things, they gain something far greater. By taking up their cross, they enter into joy and glory. There are great rewards if we dare to follow the ideals that call to us from the heights. When we surrender what holds us back, new life will spring up, making even the desert bloom. Isn’t this better than being cast away by Christ as unclean and useless?
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Most Blessed Lord, may we drink so deeply of Your Spirit that we are willing to surrender all that hinders us from following You completely and always. Amen.
