Summary:
Jesus Christ gave us the perfect example of what it means to serve others; although He was God in human form, Jesus came to earth and chose to be a humble servant. He taught His followers to lead lives of unselfish service, and expects believers to do the same. When we guard against impure, selfish motives, we position ourselves for powerful service for the kingdom of God.
Notes:
1. Christ provides the model for perfect servanthood. If He hadn’t served others, we wouldn’t
have redemption and reconciliation available to us now. The very Son of God, Himself, chose
to be a servant; this is a powerful example for us to follow.
- Everyone who follows Jesus must be willing to serve, regardless of what others think. God
calls all Christians to be servants; humble servanthood is the mark of spiritual maturity. We
need to identify others’ needs and not serve based on their wants. -
There are hindrances to developing a servanthood mentality. One hindrance is the desire
for status and the need to feel important; a second hindrance is the human strategies we
rely on to meet our own felt needs. A third hindrance is a poor concept of our self-worth;
self-centered living is a fourth hindrance.
