Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 January 2022 Outline

The inhabitants of Mount Seir, the Edomites, were the descendants of Esau. They and the descendants of Jacob inherited the elements of bitter rivalry between the brothers (Genesis 27). Even though the brothers appear to have patched up their differences in Genesis 33, their descendants lived as enemies for centuries. Note the Lord’s accusations against Edom; accusation linked with the past (v.5) and the future (v.10). The first accusation is the basis for much of the national and ethnic disputes that we see today.

Longstanding hatred leads to bloody conflicts made more intense by the desire to take over other people’s territory otherwise called land grabbing (vs.10‐11). Even when this does not happen, there is the rejoicing over the misfortunes of one another. For Edom, this foolishness led them to blaspheme against the God of Israel thus arousing His anger (v.13).

The consequence was grave; Edom will be made desolate. Pray that God will teach us to stop bearing grudge but learn to forgive the offences of others so we can live in peace with our families and neighbours.

• Brethren who are hurting and are struggling in their lives and in their families.

• SU brethren that God will continue to help us live lives of love and unity despite our differences in background and understanding.

• Grace to continue to stand together as we live, and fellowship together, having compassion for one another.

PRAY AGAINST:
∷ Stress that can bring strained relationships, and situations that will make us hurt each other and destroy the unity we have in Christ Jesus. ∷ Impatience, unkindness and unloving actions and words, that they be far from us in SU.
