TOPIC: For the Sake of His Name
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 12:19-25
KEY VERSE: For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people
1 Samuel 12:22
The ancient Israelites met at Gilgal because Saul was going to be crowned there as their first king (1 Sam. 11:15). God was not pleased that His people had asked for a king, yet on this occasion Samuel said: “For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own” (12:22).
We too are God’s own “chosen people” if we have trusted Jesus (1 Pet. 2:9). He will not leave us even though He knows we will get things wrong. He knows what we are like—selfish and forgetful. He knew it before He saved us and made us His children. The certainty of our salvation rests not in ourselves but on Jesus (1 John 5:20). He will keep us to the end.
This does not give us an excuse to continue to be selfish and just do whatever we want. Paul said, “We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (Rom. 6:2). Our choices are important. We represent Him in the world. If we don’t love, but just do our own thing, what will that show others about who Jesus is? God will never turn away from us. So let’s live out that kind of love ourselves.
We can be confident. What God saves, He keeps—for the sake of His great name!
