After a few years of struggling in school, Abbie was finally taken out of her ‘leading’ primary school and transferred to a ‘normal’ one. In Singapore’s incredibly competitive school system, where being in a ‘good’ school can improve children’s future options, many would see this as a failure.
Abbie’s parents were disappointed, and Abbie herself felt as if she had messed up big time. But soon after joining her new school, the nine year old realised what it meant to be in a normal class. “Mummy, I belong here,” she said. “I’m finally enjoying school!”
This story reminded me of how excited Zacchaeus must have felt when Jesus invited Himself to the tax collector’s home (Luke 19:5). Jesus was not interested in those who thought they were perfect; He wanted to hang out with the people who knew they had problems and didn’t deserve God’s love (v.10). Having found us—and loved us—as we are, Jesus gives us the promise of perfection through His death and resurrection. We are made perfect through His love alone.
I’ve often found my Christian life to be one of struggle, knowing that the things I do often fall way short of God’s standard. How good it is to know that we are always loved, for God’s Spirit is always at work in us, making us more like Jesus.
