Observe in vs.23-29 how Israel demonstrated her spiritual prostitution. She not only forsook God but made unholy alliances with other nations. Israel’s promiscuity was pitiable but there is also something strange about the way she conducted her prostitution. Prostitutes normally earn money from their trade. It’s the reason they are called commercial sex workers. But in Israel’s case, it was the other way round. She paid her many customers thus multiplying her immoral acts (vs.30-34).

Read vs.35-41 and observe the punishment God promises to inflict upon Israel for their prostitution (idolatry). In His wrath and jealous anger, God was ready to mete out severe punishment due an adulterous wife. By so doing, God will put an end to her prostitution, and she will no longer pay her lovers (the idols). Today, our forms of spiritual prostitution vary.

Our increased knowledge does not permit us to forsake God and blindly worship the gods of other nations. But like Israel, Christians get involved in unholy alliances in business and social lives and all kinds of brazen idolatry are introduced in our worship.

We also keep moving from one church to another to avoid submitting to spiritual authority and discipline. God, in His love and jealous anger, does punish spiritual adultery and idolatry.

• Please, Lord, help me to always use your blessings to glorify you. Deliver me from every unholy alliance.
