Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. – Isaiah 55:1, NIV

If we received a free offer to go to the supermarket and buy all we needed, including luxury goods, without having to spend any of our own money, we would probably go and take advantage of it very fast! Free offers and bargains attract us.

The wonderful offer in today’s verse in Isaiah is that we can buy wine and milk without cost. Milk represents all that we need for daily nourishment, and wine here probably represents fullness of life (Psalm 104:15 speaks of wine that gladdens a man’s heart), so the promise is that we can have everything we need to sustain us and to enrich us and it is all free because it has already been paid for by someone else! The only conditions given are that we have to come and we have to thirst.

When Jesus died on the cross, His last words were: “It is finished” (John 19:30). By this He did not mean that this was it, this was the end. The Greek word is “tetelestai” which contains the meaning that the job was perfectly perfected, or completely completed. This means that everything necessary for us was perfectly completed when Jesus died; but we need to keep on appropriating in our lives the different aspects of what was done for us at Calvary. And the first step in this is to come – to come to Jesus for whatever it is that we need – life, health, provision, healing, peace, or strength.

We also have to thirst. Jesus says in John 7:37: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” If you have ever been really parched and dry, you will know the joy and refreshment of drinking deeply from cool water. It is that sort of thirst that we should have for Jesus and the ,“living water” that He can give us (John 4:14). If we fill our lives with worldly things, we will not have the hunger and thirst for Jesus. It is the hungry who are filled with good things (Luke 1:53), but the rich (those who are full of other things) who go away empty.

Are you hungry and thirsty for more of Jesus in your life today? Then come to Him; receive from Him all that He has for you. The price has already been paid!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for paying the price for me at the cross. I am thirsty for more of you and I come to you today asking you to fill me afresh with your living water. Amen.
