Topic: Preparing and Praying for Your Successor
Opening Prayer: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 22:1-19
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Our God works in mysterious ways. Notice how the events of chapter 21 led to the discovery of the site for the building of the Temple of God (v.1). That is why we should never trivialise whatever situation God allows us to pass through. He can use any circumstance to achieve His purpose (Romans 8:28).
God did not permit David to build the Temple, but David made adequate preparation for it. Observe how he carefully prepared the materials (vs.2-4, 14), his son, Solomon (vs.6-13) and the people (vs.15-19) for the great task ahead. Read vs.6-13 again. What can parents and leaders learn from David here?
Success without a successor is failure in disguise. Leadership succession has always been a problem in many of our nations, churches and organisations. We have many abandoned projects around because leaders hardly make adequate preparation for their successors. But material legacy is not enough.
We need to help our children and would-be successors discover God’s purposes for their lives. We also need to show them God’s principle for success and pray for them to succeed even where we failed.
