TOPIC: The Death of Christ

Opening Prayer: Oh Lord, grant me divine guidance as I read and meditate on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Matthew 27:45-56

Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit? • What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Every event that surrounded the death of Jesus Christ was exceptional. Great darkness occurred at His death (vs.45). This natural occurrence testified to the gravity of Jesus’ death, while His friends and enemies alike fell silent in the encircling gloom. This darkness on that Friday afternoon was not only physical but was also a pointer to the deep spiritual darkness of the people He came to save.

What other exceptional things happened at His death (vs.51-53)? What can we learn from all these? Jesus is truly the son of God, who died to save the world (v.54). Read vs.45-50 again. How would you describe the death of Jesus? He suffered severe pain as He died! His expression of pain was misunderstood by the bystanders. His physical pain is incomparable with the spiritual one; His separation from the Father. This is a separation He had never known or experienced (Psalm 22:1-2).

In becoming sin for us, the Father, who could not behold sin, had to turn His face away from Him. Jesus was indeed despised and forsaken by all (Isaiah 53:3-6). What can we learn from the women who were present at the site of Jesus’ death (vs.55-56)?
