Opening Prayer: Grant me grace dear Lord to apply what you will teach me today as I read this passage.
Scripture: Matthew 26:1-16
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
The Jewish leaders were plotting to arrest Jesus in some clever way and kill Him (v.4), but He already knew how He would die (v.2) and that His body will not be prepared properly for burial (v.12). Luke says, “They were afraid of the people” (Luke 22:2). Why (see v.5)? Should they not be afraid of God instead, and avoid breaking one of His commandments (Exodus 20:13)? Judas entered the scene in vs.15&16 to make things easier for the leaders.
Notice his motive and compare this with that of the woman in Bethany who demonstrated that nothing was too expensive to express love for Jesus (v.7). Jesus was, in fact, preparing to sacrifice His life for our sins. Is there anything too costly to show appreciation for such love and sacrifice? It is unfortunate that the woman’s prophetic and “beautiful” action was condemned by the disciples (vs.8-10).
Sometimes our beautiful action can be misunderstood by all. What matters most is God’s commendation. Were the disciples really concerned about the poor? For instance, see John 12: 4 – 6). Are we truly concerned about the poor in our communities or are we like the disciples, using them as an excuse? There is a warning for us in 1 Corinthians 13:3.
Practice/Word Application
• So What? Be sure to please God even if it appears displeasing to man.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• May the gift I give you, dear Lord, reflect the love I have for you and others. • Praise God for who He is – the King of kings, Almighty, Holy and Righteous, all Powerful, Unchangeable, Kind and Merciful beyond measure, beautiful for every situation.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with
• Prov. 3-5; 1 Cor. 15: 1-28
