Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th January 2021 Message:

God places a very high value on all human beings and expect that we live responsibly towards one another. V.9 sums up God’s intention for giving these regulations to the people of Israel. Note that the whole community remains guilty for murder of an innocent person until the instructions from vs.3-7 are followed. Remember that we are each other’s keeper.

Read vs.10-14 again. A man who desires to marry a captive woman must treat her with dignity. She must be taken home, “where she must shave her head, cut her nails, and change the clothes she was wearing when she was captured”. This signifies removing all signs of slavery from her and thereby making her a free woman (v.13b, compare Titus 2:14 (NLT) and Ephesians 5:31-32).

The God of Israel was careful to regulate how children from polygamous homes were treated. Children do not determine who gives birth to them and therefore would have to be treated fairly in all circumstances (vs.15-17). What about the parents of a grown-up child who shows contempt for the teachings of both his parents and the Lord Himself (vs.18-21)?

Though God expect parents to put measures in place to correct children who are disobedient, this passage cannot be used as a basis of mistreating or causing harm to anyone whatsoever. Remember that we were all sinners saved by His grace (Romans 3:23-24; Ephesians 2:9).
