There were six festivals the children of Israel observed every year (See Leviticus 23). These are the big three. The Passover This celebrated the day the angel of death killed all the firstborn sons in Egypt but passed over the children of Israel. The blood of the sacrificial animal which they smeared on the lintel of the doorposts of their houses was the signal for the angel of death to spare them from destruction.
Our Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, shed His blood to redeem us from the power and consequences of sin; a great redemption we should celebrate daily. (1 Cor. 5: 7). The Festival of Weeks This was the Harvest Festival which took place every year, seven weeks after the harvests began. Festival of Tabernacles (or Booths) This was to be an annual reminder of the many years they had spent in tents while wandering in the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land.
Read Nehemiah 8:15-17 to discover how forgetful they were as a nation! People were not merely to bring tithes on these occasions but freewill offerings in addition to their sacrificed animals which they ate themselves in a central place (vs.5, 11, 14, 15). There they fellowshipped with God and with one another. God also desires that we meet regularly for worship and fellowship. (See Hebrew 10:25).
