Scripture Union Daily Guide 19th January 2021 Message:
Read vs 1-2 ‘As Israel of God, we are cautioned against improper mourning. Can we learn any lesson as New Testament Christians?’ God set aside some animals and birds as clean and fit for eating while others were considered unclean. This chapter makes it clear how to know the difference (vs.5-8). The reason is spiritual, and it is to be found in v.21. God wants His people to be holy and different from the rest of the world even in what they eat or do not eat. These are the sort of laws which no longer apply to us in the Age of Grace. (Mark 7:14-23; See also the Notes for January 5). The principle of being holy and different from the rest of the world, however, is still the same. As the chosen people of God, we are called to be holy and set apart for Him (1 Peter 2:9-10; 2 Corinthians 6:16-17). Concerning eating of clean and unclean things, Paul admonishes that if anyone eats everything, he should not condemn another who eats only vegetables, contending that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. He posits that the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Rom. 14: 1 – 3, 14 – 17).
