Scripture Union Daily Guide 13th January 2021 Message:
The Book of Proverbs is part of what is called “Wisdom Literature” in Jewish Scripture; and here we have some very wise words indeed. However, we need to bear in mind today and every time we read from this and other similar Books that we are reading poetry and not history or prophecy.
It is not always organised logically, but great ideas tumble on one another. The ideas in our passage today may be grouped into two:
1. The words we speak: One adage says that it is better to keep quiet and let people think it is probably because we are foolish than to open our mouth and remove the probability!
See how vs.1-2, 5-8, and 13 bear out this truth. On the other hand, see the value which v.4 places on wise words.
2. Our Security: What two different avenues of personal security do we find in v.10 and v.11? How have you seen both at work in your own life or in the lives of other people you know? Notice the danger of slothfulness (v.9) and haughtiness (v.12) and contrast them with the rewards of diligence (Prov. 22: 29 (KJV) and humility respectively (v. 12).

• So what? Read again what the first paragraph says we should bear in mind when we read the Book of Proverbs.
