Scripture Union Daily Guide 4th January 2021 Message for Today

You are reading Scripture Union Daily Guide Devotional for Today Monday 4th January 2021. Be blessed and inspired by today’s reading. God bless you!

TOPIC: Beatitudes

Opening Prayer: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.

Scripture: Matthew 5:1-12

Question(s) for Reflection:
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

MESSAGE: The term “Beatitudes” comes from “beati,” the Latin word for “blessed.” It is extremely necessary to read the passage in context in order not to arrive at wrong conclusions. It is important not to take only half of the truth in each case. For example, it does not say “Blessed are the poor,” or “Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty.” How do these two read in full in vs.3 and 6?

Also, v.10 does not simply say that those who are persecuted are blessed. We must take note of the cause of their persecution. These should guide our understanding of all the other verses which are not fully spelt out. For example, when v.4 says, “Blessed are those that mourn,” we need to think of what exactly is the cause of their mourning?

It is also important to note that the blessings focus on eternal rewards rather than the material blessings of this world. Praise God because He does bless us with material things in this world. Far more important, however, are the blessings that last forever, even if we suffer in this world (v.10).

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Practice/Word Application:
• So what? Read over the Beatitudes once again. Which of them requires particular action from you today?

Closing Prayer:
• Pray that these blessings may be yours.

• Thank God for His love which He has demonstrated in diverse ways of salvation, health, provisions, safety, etc.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with John 1:12 – But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God

Bible In One Year: Gen. 10-12; Rom. 4
