TOPIC: The Lord Watches Over You!

Opening Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.

Scripture: Psalm 121:1–8

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 26th November 2020 Message:

This is one of the Songs of Ascent and fits in a seamless flow with the book of Lamentations. Jeremiah ended yesterday with an expression of hope and trust in God, appealing to him not to forget, or forsake or reject the Israelites forever, but rather to restore and renew them once again.

The psalmist augments this by affirming that God will always watch over his people, day and night. Five times, the psalmist affirms this fact (vv.3,4.5,7 & 8). What do you learn from the psalmist in vv. 1 ─ 2? When in need or facing a challenge, we are tempted to seek help from elsewhere other than from God. Sometimes we look up to our pastors and people of influence and power. Other times we seek help from people with financial and material wealth, who also may be influential. Have these alternatives always worked? Many of them fail completely, but God never fails. Who do you look to in good and bad times?

Notice that God is always there to guide us from slipping or falling down (v.3), constantly offering protection (vv.5 ─ 7a) and assuring us of his presence always (v.8).

Thought: Psalm 20:7

Hymn – Sweet hour of prayer!

1. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

2. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
