Charles Stanley Daily Devotional TOPIC: What It Means to Be a Servant
SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: Philippians 2:5-7
The disciples gathered around a table to celebrate Passover with Jesus. And then Christ did the unexpected: He took water and a cloth, knelt before the 12 other men one at a time, and washed their feet.
Peter initially protested. It seemed backwards for the Master to serve His disciples this way. But Jesus explained that Peter would understand later what this act meant (John 13:7-8). In that moment, Jesus was demonstrating the heart of His entire mission: He came into this world as a servant (Matthew 20:28).
A bondslave was the lowest of household servants and had the distasteful job of washing the feet of anyone who entered. This is the very task Christ voluntarily performed that evening, right before His trial and sufferings would begin. The humility He showed in washing dust from His disciples’ feet foreshadowed the greater service He would render the next day, taking upon Himself the shame and penalty of humanity’s sin by dying on the cross.
Ephesians 2:10 tells us Christians are created for the purpose of good works. We were saved to serve our Master. When we surrender to the Lord, we begin to live a life marked not by self-promotion but by humble service that reflects His character.
