Scripture Union Daily Guide 5 August 2026 – OUTLINE

The type of sword mentioned here indicates judgment (Revelation 2:12). Despite the strong hold of Satan in Pergamum, the Christians remained faithful to Christ (Revelation 2:13). This is a great commendation. You may not throw down the throne of Satan, but you can live victoriously above it.

The church was a mixed multitude as in most places today. While some remained faithful; others had been manipulated by Satan. They succumbed to idolatry and sexual sin (Revelation 2:14). Still others were trapped in certain heresies (Revelation 2:15). Whatever the differences, both Balaam and Nicolaitan were false teachers. Think of modern-day examples.

The Lord does not rebuke the church for any wrongdoing; instead, He encourages them on account of the persecution awaiting them. In His love, He also calls them to repent (Revelation 2:16). He does not desire the death of a sinner but there is a terrible judgment for those who fail to turn away from evil (Revelation 2:16b).

Through the centuries, including contemporary experience, Christians have suffered violence, imprisonment, even death. But the Lord encourages the Smyrna church and all believers: “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer.”

Closing Prayer
Lord, in time of persecution and suffering, please help me to be true and faithful in my walk with you.
