TOPIC: You Have Forsaken Your First Love
BIBLE READING
Revelation 2:1-7
1 “To the [a]angel of the church of Ephesus write,
‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: 2 “I know your works, your labor, your [b]patience, and that you cannot [c]bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; 3 and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. 4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. 6 But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
7 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” ’
QUESTIONS FOR MEDITATION
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 3 August 2026 Outline
The angel here refers to the messenger or the minister of the church. We are reminded that Jesus is in the church (Revelation 2:1) and sees all that goes on (Revelation 2:2). We have here an example of commendation before correction, unless there is really nothing to commend. They were known for hard work as against the laziness of many today. They persevered in the face of hardship and persecution. They did not give in to discouragement.
Their maturity was also seen in the way they dealt with wicked men, which probably included the false apostles (Revelation 2:2-3). All these hold great lessons for us. See Revelation 2:6 for another commendation on their rejection of heresy.
Notice however, the major trespass the Lord holds against them and for which He reprimands them (Revelation 2:4). Compare with the Lord’s demand for wholehearted love (Matthew 22:37,38) and Paul’s conclusion in 1 Corinthians 13:13. What makes us lose the passion with which we first enjoyed our newfound faith and love for the Lord? Is it familiarity, compromise, pressures of life or sin?
Whatever the reason, losing our first love for our Saviour hurts Him deeply. There are three steps to restoration here: remember, repent, and do (Revelation 2:5). Ponder over these. Failure to repent leads to judgment and punishment (Revelation 2:5b). The one who takes heed to the word of God and thus overcomes will enjoy that perfect and eternal fellowship with God (Revelation 2:7).
CLOSING PRAYER
Ask the Lord for the grace to retain your glowing days of zeal for Him.
