TOPIC: Jesus Is Coming Again

Bible Reading
Revelation 1:1-8

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must [a]shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.

To Him who [b]loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us [c]kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, [d]the Beginning and the End,” says the [e]Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Introduction to Revelation
It is believed by many that the Apostle John, the son of Zebedee, wrote this book about 95 AD. It was at a time of persecution when the Roman authorities were enforcing the cult of Emperor worship. John wrote primarily to the seven churches in Asia asking them to reject compromise and to resist firmly Emperor worship. John assured them that when the devil has done his worst, he would be defeated and punished eternally. This book is highly symbolic. Dimensions, days, quantities, etc. are all symbolic and are not to be taken literally. Understanding it may therefore be difficult, and interpretations may differ; but the main message of the book is clear; judgment is coming with the soon coming of Christ, and Christians will be vindicated at last. There is the need to withstand oppositions and persecutions and persevere in a life of holiness to the end.

Questions for meditation
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st August 2026 | OUTLINE

The Revelation is the unfolding disclosure of major end–of–time events, which on one hand is about Christ and on the other, is also from Him. It is for all people but sent through Apostle John. Note the titles of Jesus in this short passage: Messiah or Christ, Loyal Witness, First born from the dead, Ruler of all earthly kings, The A to Z (Alpha and Omega), The Beginning and the End, The God who was, The God who is and The God who is about to come. Reflect on

(i) What He did for us, – loved, washed us clean from our sin by His blood;

(ii) What He is doing for us, – making us a kingdom, Priests for His Father; and

(iii) What He will yet do, – coming again riding on the clouds, evidently to judge the world. The Revelation is therefore about the One Who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. It makes sense therefore to believe that it is a priceless privilege to read the revelation, heed the message and pattern one’s life in accordance with its demands (Revelation 1:3).

Closing Prayer
Help me, dear Lord, to appreciate how mighty you are, and how great your love is to me.

Prayer for the week
Pray for orphans and widows around you today, that they will be comforted. Pray that the Lord will fill every vacuum in their lives, and continually raise help for them
