Notice the word Paul places at the centre of this declaration: today.

I declare to you today. Not eventually. Not looking back from a distance. Today — while I am still here, while the opportunity to say it still exists, while there is still time for it to mean something. Paul understood that the present moment is the only moment in which words can be spoken and received. Tomorrow he would be gone. The window would close. So he used it — fully, deliberately, without holding anything in reserve for a more convenient occasion that would never arrive.

The context is Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders — people he had poured three years into, people he would never see again this side of eternity. He knows it. They know it. And in that awareness, something in Paul refuses to waste the moment on comfortable words that would send them away feeling good but equipped with less than they needed.

So he makes a declaration that most people would never dare make at a farewell. Not “I enjoyed our time together” or “I am proud of what we built.” He says: I am innocent of your blood. I gave you everything. I held nothing back.

The word translated “whole will of God” is pasan tēn boulēn tou theou — the entire counsel, the complete plan and purpose of God, every dimension of what God has revealed for human salvation and flourishing. Paul did not curate it. He did not select the passages most likely to be well received and quietly leave out the ones that made the room uncomfortable. He gave them all of it — repentance and grace, judgment and mercy, the cost of discipleship alongside the joy of it, holiness alongside freedom. The complete picture.

There is a reason most people do not say what Paul said. Proclaiming the whole will of God requires a willingness to be misunderstood, to lose approval, to say things that create distance before they create freedom. It is far easier to soften the difficult edges, to skip past the challenging passages, to keep people comfortable at the cost of keeping them incomplete. Paul refused to pay that price — because he understood that the short-term cost of saying the hard thing is far smaller than the long-term cost of leaving someone without what they needed to hear.

His peace at this farewell does not come from their response. It comes from his own integrity. I am innocent — not because everyone flourished, not because no one fell away, not because every seed he planted produced immediate fruit — but because he was faithful to give what he was entrusted to give. The outcome belongs to God. The faithfulness belongs to the servant.

That is the standard these verses set. Not results — faithfulness. Not popularity — integrity. Not a comfortable farewell — a clear conscience.

There is a today in front of you. People God has placed in your life who need more than they are currently receiving from you. The question is not whether the moment will come. The question is whether, when it does, you will say the full thing or the safe thing.

Say it today. While it is still today.
