Daily Devotional Message
One of the most common questions Christians ask is: what is God’s will for my life? It is asked with genuine hunger, and often with real anxiety — the fear of missing the plan, of choosing wrong, of spending years in the wrong direction.
Paul answers a piece of that question here with unusual directness. No mystery. No prayer vigil required to decode it. This is God’s will for you: your sanctification. He is telling us plainly — part of what God intends for your life, right now, in this season, is that you be set apart for Him. And then he makes it even more specific: that means, among other things, avoiding sexual immorality.
The word for sanctification in the Greek is hagiasmos — holiness, consecration, being set apart for sacred use. It is the same root as the word for saint and for holy. To be sanctified is not primarily about a list of things you cannot do. It is about being reserved for something. A vessel consecrated for the temple was not emptied of purpose — it was filled with a higher one. The call to sanctification is the call to be set apart from what diminishes you so that you can be fully available for what God is building through you.
Thessalonica was a port city saturated with sexual immorality — it was woven into the culture, the religion, the social fabric. The believers Paul was writing to were not sheltered from temptation. They were surrounded by it, the way most of your readers are today. Screens carry what the temples of Thessalonica used to carry. The pressure to conform is just as persistent, just as ordinary, just as relentless as it was then. And Paul’s answer is the same: you are set apart. You belong to a different order. What is normal around you does not have to become normal inside you.
The Greek word for sexual immorality here is porneia — a broad word covering every form of sexual expression outside of God’s design. Paul is not being vague to avoid difficult conversations. He is being comprehensive because the call to holiness covers the whole person, the whole life, every expression of something God designed to be sacred.
This verse is not a hammer. It is an invitation — to live at a level above what the world around you has settled for. To carry yourself as someone who has been set apart, reserved, consecrated. Because that is exactly what you are. And what God is protecting in that consecration is not just your purity. It is your clarity, your spiritual sensitivity, your capacity to hear His voice and walk in His purposes without the static that sexual sin introduces into a person’s interior life.
God’s will for you is wholeness. And holiness is the path to it.
Morning Prayer
Father, I receive this verse this morning not as a list of restrictions but as a revelation of Your will — and I want to walk in Your will. You have set me apart. You have consecrated me for something. And I do not want what is around me to become what is inside me.
Where I have failed in this area — where I have allowed what culture normalises to creep into my own patterns of thought or behaviour — I bring that before You now. Not in shame, but in honesty. You already know. And You are not standing over me in condemnation. You are standing over me as the God who sanctifies — the One who does the setting apart, who provides both the standard and the grace to walk in it.
Holy Spirit, strengthen me today in the specific places where this call is most difficult. Where the pressure to conform is loudest, let the reality of being set apart be louder. Let me live as what I am — someone who belongs to You, reserved for Your purposes, consecrated for something greater than what the world is offering.
Protect my mind. Protect my body. Protect my capacity to hear Your voice clearly. And let the holiness You are building in me produce the fruit of a life that is wholly available to You. In Jesus’ name — Amen.
