Charles Stanley Daily Devotional TOPIC: The Causes of Discouragement
SCRIPTURE: Psalms 43:1-5
What has caused you to feel discouraged? Sometimes the reason is easy to identify, but other times there are subtle, less obvious factors. Things that can contribute to discouragement include …
An area of weakness. Some sins seem to have a stronghold in our life, and no matter how hard we try to overcome them, we still struggle. If the temptation begins to feel inescapable, we can become disheartened.
Unanswered prayer. When the answer to a prayer is no or not now, we can lose hope, especially if we’ve prayed a long time.
Prayerlessness. Failing to understand God’s sovereignty and timing can lead to discouragement. However, cutting off communication with Him will lead only to deeper despair. Consistent prayer keeps us connected to our source of hope.
The sense you can’t please God. This is a consequence of a works-based faith, which wrongly assumes God’s favor is tied to our good works. Instead, believe the truth of Scripture: Our Father’s love is based on His own grace, not our deeds.
Psalm 46 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). The next time you feel discouraged, pray this verse to the Lord, asking Him to fill you with His peace and joy.
BIBLE IN A YEAR: Proverbs 26-28
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: A life of faith isn’t always easy. But we have a constant refuge in times of trouble.
