“I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.” — Daniel 2:23 (NIV)
Daily Devotional Message
Daniel had not yet spoken to the king. The hardest part of his day was still ahead of him.
The night before, he and his three friends had prayed urgently — Nebuchadnezzar had issued a death decree against every wise man in Babylon after no one could tell him his dream and its meaning. Daniel and his friends were on that list. They gathered and asked God to reveal the mystery, and during the night, God did exactly that.
What Daniel did next is the lesson.
He did not rush to the king. He did not immediately begin rehearsing what to say. He stopped — right there, before anything else moved — and he gave thanks. He praised God for what had already been received before stepping into what still had to be done. And in that prayer, he named every specific thing God had given him:
What Daniel Acknowledged God Had Given
Notice that Daniel called God “the God of my ancestors.” He was deep inside a foreign empire, far from home, surrounded by a culture that worshipped other gods. But his praise anchored itself in covenant — the same God who had been faithful to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob was the God being faithful to him right now, in Babylon. His circumstances had changed. His God had not.
Also notice the small word that most readers walk past: “what we asked of you.” This was not a solo prayer. Daniel had gathered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and they had sought God together (v.17–18). The answer came to Daniel — but the prayer had been corporate. God answered the community that pressed into Him collectively. There is something about praying together, about friends who will find you in the crisis and seek God alongside you, that moves heaven in ways that solitary prayer sometimes cannot.
Before this day goes any further — before you face whatever Nebuchadnezzar is waiting for you today — take a moment to do what Daniel did. Stop. Name what God has already given you. Thank Him specifically, not generally. Acknowledge that the wisdom to navigate this day, the strength to stand in it, the answers you need — they come from Him, not from you.
Go to the king after you have thanked the King.
Morning Prayer
Father, before this day begins — before I move, before I speak, before I face what is ahead — I stop to thank You. Like Daniel, I want gratitude to go first.
You have given me wisdom I did not earn and strength I did not manufacture. You have answered prayers I prayed in desperate moments. You have been faithful to me the way You were faithful to my fathers and mothers in the faith — consistently, quietly, surely. And I am grateful.
Whatever I am walking into today — whatever conversation, whatever challenge, whatever unknown is waiting at the end of this morning — I declare that I am not going in my own wisdom. I am going in Yours. Let me carry into this day the same confidence Daniel carried into Nebuchadnezzar’s court: not because I have the answers, but because I know the One who does.
Thank You, God of my ancestors, God of this moment, God of every tomorrow I cannot yet see. I praise You — and then I go. In Jesus’ name — Amen.
