BIBLE READING
Luke 19:1-10

1 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

QUESTIONS FOR MEDITATION

►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 July 2026 – OUTLINE

The introduction of Zacchaeus sends both positive and negative signals. Tax collectors, in his time have been portrayed as rich men with disfavor. Notice how readily Jesus associated with him (Luke 19:5). He chose Zachaeus’ place, the one upon whom others look down and with whom they will not associate (see Luke 19:7). We need to understand that Jesus judges us fairly. A person who accepts and believes in Him, despite their failings, will be forgiven provided they repent.

The spirit of faith is a spirit that allows one to search for God’s will in order to carry out His saving plan. Jesus never judged people based on their sins and status in life, faith is all He requires. Salvation came because Jesus had come to seek and to save sinners (Luke 19:10). Read Luke 19:8 again. How do we fix our wrongdoings with others?

Zacchaeus discovered one of the central principles of achieving and maintaining balance in his work. He altered the focus of his work from himself to others. He understood that he could use his time and talents to serve others and impact their lives. Compare this with the rich young ruler in Luke 18:18-23.
