TOPIC: Who Do You Listen To?
BIBLE READING
2 Samuel 17:1-14
QUESTIONS FOR MEDITATION
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
Absalom did a very wise thing in seeking the advice of the two experienced Counsellors available (cf. Proverbs 11:14). When faced with conflicting “expert” opinions what are we to do? Clearly, Ahithophel knew what he was talking about. Note in 2 Samuel 16:23 what is said about him. Surprise attacks have always been accepted as a good military strategy. But then Hushai too had his good points, as everybody immediately agreed
. The majority’s opinion, however, is no proof that one particular counsel is right or wrong. What makes one superior to the other in this case is God’s direct intervention in answer to David’s prayer (2 Samuel 15:31).
Absalom had done wrong revolting against his father, yes. We, however, should learn that in a group of followers, everybody has his/her own motives/intentions. That is why it is wise to only look to God for direction. He will expose the moles in our circle and direct us away from their evil and selfish advice. He wants the best for us.
Here, the advice in Proverbs 3:5-7 is very pertinent: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding: in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”
Prayer for the week
Pray against apartheid wherever it’s still prevailing. Pray that those who are practicing it will see other races as being created by God, and that all people are equal before God.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank you for your Spirit who always points us in the right direction. May I always be attentive to His counsel.
