Scripture: Proverbs 8:1–21

Reflection
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

In our reading today, Wisdom is personified and pictured as a woman. Wisdom is needed in all areas of life and by all: rulers and their subjects. To walk in the path of wisdom we need to listen, pay attention and show interest in embracing that which is right, true, sound, discreet and prudent (vv.5–7).

Wisdom is to be valued above jewels and material possessions. With wisdom, peace, prosperity and progress are ushered by rulers into their domain. What categorical promise is made to those who genuinely seek wisdom in v.17? Compare with James 1:5–8.

Note that acquisition of wisdom brings useful by–products (v.18). Compare that with 1 Kings 3:5–14 and Matthew 6:33. It is therefore clear as to why there is so much stress, unrest, vice and chaos in the world. We assign our priorities wrongly and focus on getting wealth, power and fame using “clever means” which often involve using dishonest and unfair methods.

Service
We serve God by serving others. Service is a way to greatness. Committed service flows from a committed heart. In practical terms, service portrays how Christians should live in the Church, in the home and in the community in general. Service challenges us to a life in which we imitate Christ, living for the sake of others and acting in love and kindness. It is in this life of fruitful service that we find relevance, fulfillment and lasting joy and rewards.

• Enable me Lord, to get my priorities right at every stage of my life.
• Thank God for the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and His resurrection for the remission of the sins of mankind: the only assurance of eternity with God.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Luke 10:19
