Civil war had broken out among Israelites. These were fighters that knew each other well so their engagements could become emotional at any given time. Notice what gave Asahel confidence to pursue Abner (2 Samuel 2:18). He unfortunately lacked knowledge and experience. He needed to understand that running fast alone does not guarantee victory in battle. He needed to be tactical. Asahel terribly misread the situation. He was pursuing a seasoned fighter.
Notice however Abner’s multiple efforts to avoid the disaster Asahel was courting (2 Samuel 2:20-22). He realised that killing him would turn the battle emotional and into war between families. Asahel ignored the warnings and paid dearly for his immaturity. As believers we must know our capabilities and limitations. Joab and Abishai enraged by their brother’s death pursued Abner to revenge but not to settle national issues causing division.
Read 2 Samuel 2:26-28 again and notice how Abner’s timely words helped to bring the battle to an end. “A gentle answer turns away wrath …” (Proverbs 15:1). Use words wisely. What can we learn from the outcome of the fight between the house of Saul and the house of David in 2 Samuel 2:30-31 (compare 2 Samuel 3:1). Fighting against God’s purpose does not pay anyone.
