TOPIC: Growing in Spiritual Excellence
📖 Bible Verse for Today
2 Peter 1:5 (KJV)
“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge.”
Daily Devotional Message
Today’s daily devotional reminds us that the Christian life is meant to be a journey of continuous spiritual growth. In 2 Peter 1:5, the Apostle Peter encourages believers to be intentional about developing godly character and maturity.
The verse begins with the words, “giving all diligence.” This speaks of effort, focus, and commitment. Spiritual growth does not happen automatically. Just as physical growth requires nourishment and care, spiritual growth requires intentional pursuit.
Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God, but Peter teaches that faith should continue to grow and produce fruit in our lives.
He says, “add to your faith virtue.”
Virtue refers to moral excellence and godly character. Genuine faith should influence the way we live, speak, and treat others. Faith is not meant to remain only in our hearts—it should be visible through our actions.
When we walk in virtue:
- We choose integrity even when no one is watching
- We pursue honesty and righteousness
- We seek to reflect the character of Christ
The verse then says, “and to virtue knowledge.”
This knowledge is more than information—it is spiritual understanding. God desires for us to know Him more deeply through His Word, prayer, and personal relationship.
Many people want spiritual strength without spiritual growth. But growth requires learning, listening, and applying God’s truth consistently.
The more you know God, the more your life begins to change.
You start seeing situations differently.
You become more discerning.
You gain wisdom for daily decisions.
You develop stronger faith because you understand God’s character more clearly.
Another important lesson in this verse is progression.
Peter describes growth step by step. Spiritual maturity is not instant—it develops over time. God works in seasons, teaching us one lesson after another.
Sometimes, believers become discouraged because they feel they are not growing fast enough. But growth often happens gradually.
A tree does not become strong overnight.
Roots develop slowly beneath the surface before visible fruit appears.
In the same way, God may be doing deep work within you that others cannot yet see.
Do not underestimate small steps of obedience.
Every prayer matters.
Every moment in God’s Word matters.
Every act of faithfulness matters.
Growth happens through consistency.
This verse also challenges us to avoid spiritual stagnation. It is possible to become comfortable and stop pursuing deeper growth. But God calls us to continue adding to our faith.
There is always more to learn.
More wisdom to gain.
More maturity to develop.
More of Christ’s character to reflect.
Today, ask yourself:
- Am I growing spiritually, or have I become spiritually passive?
- Am I pursuing God intentionally?
- Am I allowing my faith to shape my character?
God desires a growing relationship with you.
He wants your faith to become stronger, your character deeper, and your understanding clearer.
The beautiful thing about spiritual growth is that God helps you through the process. You are not growing by your own strength alone. The Holy Spirit guides, teaches, and transforms you daily.
Your responsibility is to remain willing and diligent.
Keep seeking Him.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.
Because a growing faith leads to a stronger life.
And a stronger life reflects the glory of God.

Give me a deeper understanding of Your Word and a stronger desire to know You more. Keep me from becoming spiritually stagnant or distracted.
Strengthen my faith daily and continue shaping me into the person You created me to be.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
