Scripture Union Daily Guide 4 May 2026 | OUTLINE
What were the reasons Jeremiah gave for God’s coming judgement against the Ammonites (vs. 1 and 4)? The Ammonites, like the Moabites, were descendants of Lot and neighbours to Israel (Genesis 19:30–38). Though related to Israel, they have been enemies of Israel (Judges 11:15–27), raided Judah (2 Kings 24:2) and encroached into Israel’s land (v.1).
Read vs. 2, 3 & 5 again, and observe the destruction that would come on them. This would enable Israel to regain its rightful territory (v.2b). Also take note of God’s promise in v.6 (cf. 46:26; 48:47).
In vs. 7–22, God also declares judgement on the Edomites, descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob, for their arrogance and mistreatment of Israel (see Obadiah 8–14). Their pride in their defences (v.16; cf. Obadiah 2–4), trust in their wealth (v.4) and military strength, will lead to their downfall (vs. 8–10).
Read vs. 11, 12–13 again. What do these verses teach us about God?
The judgement of Ammon and Edom demonstrates that no nation or individual is beyond God’s reach. But God does not punish arbitrarily. However, we can escape His judgement if we repent and seek His mercy through Christ our Lord.
So what?
Examine your heart and deeds. Which of the sins of Ammon and Edom are still in your life? Decide to repent of them today.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to always place my trust in you, reject self-reliance, and oppression of others, but love and live in humility with all.
