2 Samuel 23:13-17
King James Version
13 And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam: and the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of Rephaim.
14 And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.
15 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!
16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the Lord.
17 And he said, Be it far from me, O Lord, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.
PRAISE & WORSHIP
David, while running from Saul who was determined to kill him, escaped to the cave of Adullam. There, all sorts of people were gathered to him – those who were in distress, who were in debt, who were discontented. This was not a perfect group but David became their leader, more like a leader of outcasts and rebels.
It must have been difficult to lead these men because they were not perfect. However, the cave of Adullam was a training ground for David. He needed to learn how to lead the children of Israel who had antecedents of rebellion. These men eventually became the mighty men of David who did exploits. This says something of David’s leadership ability. He could turn outcasts and rebels into mighty men without becoming influenced by them.
Beloved, you should not be quick to despise people who seemingly do not fit into societal molds. Some of those people are unrefined diamonds. If God puts you in a position to relate with them, ask Him to help you transform them into more responsible individuals. David, while being trained by God in the cave of Adullam, also trained these men to become men of war and they in turn were useful to him, in the wilderness and throughout his reign as king. They became his staunch loyalists because he had invested in them.
They were even willing to give up their lives for him. They risked their lives to get water for David because he expressed his thirst, they refused to allow David to go to war against Absalom because they said he was worth ten thousand of them. They were willing to die protecting him (2 Samuel 18:3).
For every training you receive, God expects you to also train others. Every investment you make in other people will also come back to bless you. Today, make up your mind to positively influence those that come your way, whether or not they look responsible. The Lord will help you, in Jesus’ name.
