Opening Prayer
Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.
Bible Reading
2 Timothy 4:1-8
1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Questions for Meditation
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q3: Is there any command for me to obey?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 26 April 2026 | OUTLINE
Like a retiring General, Paul dished out his final orders to one of his trusted soldiers, Timothy. Read 2 Timothy 4:1-2 again and take note of the details of Paul’s charge to Timothy. Why was this charge necessary (2 Timothy 4:3-4)? See the next set of orders in 2 Timothy 4:5. One of the five ministry offices is that of an Evangelist (see Ephesians 4:11).
Some scholars likened it to the middle finger of our hands which is often the longest of the five to depict how important it is (1 Corinthians 9:16, Romans 1:15,16). Paul’s charge to Timothy reminds us that preaching is not for Pastors alone, but an assignment for all believers (cf. Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16), and it is an urgent task.
Our hearers today will not always be there. We are therefore called to be prompt in obedience to this Holy Spirit’s command despite the prevailing situation. This requires endurance, faithfulness and commitment, given the attitude of the people to sound doctrines that Paul describes in 2 Timothy 4:3-4. Paul was confident about finishing well (2 Timothy 4:6-8). If your life were ending today, could you say the same?
