The Sunday After: What to Do When Easter Feels Like Just Another Monday
The Sunday After: What to Do When Easter Feels Like Just Another Monday

The flowers are wilting. The leftover ham is somehow still in the fridge. The matching pastel outfits are tossed in the laundry basket. And the house—which was buzzing with family, laughter, and maybe a little too much sugar—is now quiet.

Yesterday was Easter Sunday. The worship was passionate, the sermon was powerful, and for a few hours, the weight of the world felt lighter. But today? Today is Monday. The alarm still went off. The emails still piled up. The difficult diagnosis didn’t disappear. The prodigal child still hasn’t come home. The marriage still feels fragile.

So what do you do when Easter—the celebration of the greatest victory in history—feels like just another Monday?

You don’t pretend. And you don’t panic. You turn to a verse that rarely gets quoted on Easter Sunday but was written for the Monday after.

Lamentations 3:22–23 (NIV)

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Most Easter posts highlight Matthew 28 (“He is risen!”), and rightly so. But the prophet Jeremiah wrote Lamentations from the ashes of a destroyed Jerusalem. He knew what it felt like to wake up after a holy moment and still be surrounded by rubble.

Here’s the truth those verses declare: God’s compassions are not seasonal. They are not reserved for holiday weekends. They are new every morning—including this gray, tired, letdown Monday.

The resurrection didn’t just happen once, two thousand years ago. It happens every time you wake up and find that you are not consumed. Every time mercy meets you before coffee. Every time you choose to believe that the empty tomb still means something for your empty feeling.

Let’s normalize something: post-holiday letdown is real. Psychologists call it “event withdrawal.” After weeks of anticipation (Lent planning, egg hunts, family travel, special music), the sudden drop in emotional and social stimulation can feel like a crash.

For Christians, there’s an added layer: spiritual pressure. We think, “If I’m still anxious/depressed/lonely the day after Easter, maybe my faith isn’t strong enough.”

That lie comes straight from the enemy. The disciples themselves went from “He is risen!” on Sunday to hiding behind locked doors on Monday (John 20:19). Fear and doubt didn’t disappear overnight. But Jesus didn’t shame them. He showed up. Through locked doors.

He’ll show up for you today, too—even if it feels like a normal Monday.

A Prayer for When the Celebration Ends

If you don’t have the words this morning, borrow these. Say them slowly. Let the silence between each line be just as holy as the words.

Lord,

The eggs are collected. The ham is eaten. The family has gone home.
Maybe I feel closer to You today—or maybe I feel nothing at all.

If Easter felt perfect, thank You. But if it felt messy, lonely, disappointing, or just exhausting…
remind me:
The tomb was empty on Monday too.

I don’t need a mountain-top experience today.
I just need Your mercies—the new ones You promised.
Meet me in the laundry. Meet me in the commute. Meet me in the quiet house.

Give me grace for a slow start.
And let me be as kind to myself as You are to me.

In the name of the Risen One who didn’t stay in the garden, but walked right into Monday’s locked rooms,
Amen.

3 Practical Ways to Live Out “New Every Morning” This Week

You don’t have to manufacture resurrection feelings. You just have to take the next small step.

1. Give yourself 5 minutes of “un-hurried honesty”

Before you check your phone, sit with a notebook or a voice memo. Finish this sentence: “Right now, I actually feel…” No spiritualizing. No fixing. Just naming. God already knows. He’s not afraid of your real emotions.

2. Re-read the Easter story from a different Gospel

Read Mark 16 or Luke 24—but this time, notice what the disciples didn’t understand. They were confused, scared, and slow to believe. Yet Jesus stayed. Your confusion is not a faith failure.

3. Do one “mercy action” for yourself or another

Mercy isn’t just a feeling—it’s a verb. Take a 10-minute walk without a podcast. Send a text to someone else who might be having a letdown day (“Thinking of you—Easter Monday is weird, huh?”). Let God’s compassion flow through you to yourself and others.

“His mercies are new right now. Great is His faithfulness—on Sunday, on Monday, and on every ordinary day in between.”

He is risen. And because He is, so can you—even on a Monday.
