Scripture Reading
Psalms 114:1-8
1 When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
2 Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.
3 The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.
5 What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?
6 Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?
7 Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;
8 Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.
Questions for Meditation
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 26 March 2026 | MESSAGE
This Psalm points back to Exodus and retells the history of Israel in a beautiful, poetic manner (Psalms 114:1-2). The theme of “the presence of the Lord,” runs through the Psalm.
Psalms 114:2 shows that the Exodus from Egypt though messy was for God’s missional purpose. The Exodus wasn’t just about deliverance from slavery, but even more importantly, freedom for Israel to experience God’s presence and power and to live as his people (His sanctuary). This truth parallels the process and purpose of our salvation. We are saved to serve God’s missional purpose. The New Testament Church should be a community filled with the presence and power of God, and an expression of God’s Kingdom (see 1 Peter 2:9-10).
Read Psalms 114:3-8 again. How did nature respond to God’s presence with the Israelites? What can we learn from this for our journey of faith? If creation responded in awe and trembled at God’s presence, how should we?
In our journey of faith, we might encounter obstacles that seem insurmountable, like the Red Sea. But with God’s presence, nothing can stop us from reaching our goal in Christ.
