SCRIPTURE READING
Luke 9:51-62
51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Scripture Union Daily Guide 22 February 2026 | OUTLINE
Notice the two things Luke 9:51 says concerning Jesus. Why didn’t the Samaritans receive Jesus and His disciples (Luke 9:52-53)? It is a pity that despite the relationship between the Jews and the Samaritans, they despised each other with passion. This might have prompted the action of the Samaritans and counter-reaction of James and John (Luke 9:54). We will face opposition and rejection in our walk with the Lord as Jesus and His disciples did. We should learn from Jesus how to handle such situation (Luke 9:55-56; cf. Luke 9:5; Matthew 5:38-48).
Serving God demands our total commitment and love for Him (Deuteronomy 6:5). We are required to follow and serve the Lord without hesitance and restriction. He should not be given a second position in our lives. We should not allow anything to come between us and our prompt response to the Lord’s call. Lack of good salary and job security (Luke 9:57-58,60), family considerations (Luke 9:59-60), and lack of experience or any other ‘cogent’ reason should not interfere with our commitment to God’s call. We should always be ready to serve the Lord in any area He demands our service. Are you in any way resisting to respond to the Lord’s call to serve Him?
