“As He was alone praying” (Luke 9:18a), shows prayer as the Master’s way of life (Luke 6:12; Luke 11:1; Mark 1:35). How does this lifestyle challenge you (Luke 18:1)?
Notice the two crucial questions Jesus posed to His disciples in Luke 9:18b,20a. The first has to do with the other people’s opinion and knowledge about Jesus while the other addresses our personal opinion and knowledge of Christ. Knowing about Jesus and knowing Him are different issues. Many people, like the crowd, are speculating about who Jesus is (Luke 9:19, cf. Luke 9:7-8). Notice Peter’s answer (Luke 9:20b; cf. Matthew 16:16). How did Peter receive such a revelation? (See Matthew 16:17). Have you received and accepted God’s revelation of Jesus as the Messiah and Son of the living God? Why did Jesus ask His disciples not to tell anybody about this? Half knowledge is dangerous.
Read Luke 9:22 again. What does this say about the Messiahship of Jesus? It is on this nature of His Messiahship that He calls us His disciples to follow in His steps, by being willing to endure any and every kind of suffering for His sake and God’s glory (Luke 9:23-24). In Luke 9:22, Jesus was very sure of His suffering, death and resurrection as He was also very certain of His Second Coming (Luke 9:26). What challenge does His Second Coming throw at us (Luke 9:26-27)?
