TOPIC: A Priest forever!

SCRIPTURE READING
Psalms 110:1-7

1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

2 The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.

3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

4 The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.

6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.

7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

QUESTIONS FOR MEDITATION
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

David perhaps wrote this Psalm to be sung by the temple singers to celebrate the establishment of his throne in Jerusalem (2 Samuel 5:6-12). He, by his conquest of Jerusalem, believed that God has given him victory over all his enemies and invited him to sit in the place of supreme power (Psalms 110:1). From the hill of Zion in Jerusalem, David rules his people and condemns all his enemies (Psalms 110:2), with the aid of his loyal subjects who are committed to serving his monarchy and fighting his battles (Psalms 110:3).

At the same time, it appears that David was inspired by the Holy Spirit to prophesy in the psalm about the promised Messiah (Psalms 110:1). After His death, Jesus was raised by the Father and was exalted to His right hand (see Acts 2:33). By His victory over Satan and death, King Jesus overcame all His enemies. They are all set under His feet like a mere footstool. The mighty scepter was a sign of the king’s power and authority arrayed in holy majesty (Psalms 110:3).

In Psalms 110:4, Jesus is referred to as a Priest forever in the order of Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18-20; cf. Hebrews 5:7-10). Jesus is not only our King, but also our High Priest, having offered Himself as a sacrifice for our sins to bring us to God (Hebrews 7:26-27).
