Scripture Union Daily Guide – 8 January 2026 | OUTLINE

Today’s passage centres on Jesus’ recruitment of four of His disciples who were fishermen, Simon, Andrew (see Mark 1:16-20 for other details), James and John who toiled through the night without any catch. Notice Simon’s willingness to lend his boat to the Master for His teaching ministry (Luke 5:3). After using the boat, the Lord asked him to cast his net into the sea. Though it is more difficult to catch fish during the daytime, Simon obeyed the Lord’s command, and we can observe the result in Luke 5:6-7.

What can we learn from the partnership that took place between those in Simon’s boat and fishers in other boats? Are we willing to solicit the help of other believers whenever a particular ministry activity becomes overwhelming?

Notice the reaction of Simon and his partners when they saw the miraculous catch (Luke 5:8-10a). Obedience to God’s instructions results in divine intervention and supernatural supplies. There and then, Jesus commissioned them to become fishers of men. God is still calling people everywhere to follow Him. How prepared are you to respond to the Master’s call? What do you have to leave behind in order to follow Jesus faithfully (Luke 5:11; cf. Luke 9:23-24)?.
